I love meeting new people both socially and on a professional level, but at the same time, I don’t like being put into a room strictly to speak to people and carry on conversations. I would much rather meet people on a casual or candid basis and take it from there.
Networking is a common fear in everyone. Some people try to avoid it as much as possible and find other means of lead generation or building relationships. The truth is, as entrepreneurs, networking is an essential part of our business.
Here are a few of my favourite tips for networking to make it as painless as possible:
1. Use the Magic of Social Media – If you are not ready for face to face meetings, social media can be a great source for getting connected with people in your industry. Keep your messages short and sweet and try not to dive right into what services you offer. Make a connection and start from there.
2. Attend FUN Networking Events – When I think of networking, I think of standing around in a room full of people while sipping on cocktails just to make small talk. It does not have to be that way! I recently attended a Blogger’s event in Toronto at Paint Lounge. I met new people and some that I even already had a relationship with on social media. It was fun and not in any way was I forced to make small talk and swap business cards.
3. Less is MORE – Stop feeling pressured to collect as many business cards as you can when you go to a networking event. Instead, try to focus on making a few strong connections with new people you meet. These relationships will become more valuable to your business in the future.
By following these simple tips, it should be easier for you to network. In the end, networking is all about building relationships with people who can become business colleagues or even friends. So relax, and have fun!
How do you overcome fear itself? A truly remarkable friend and colleague of mine, Jay Wong, recently published an eBook, Become Fearless: How to overcome fear and start living your dream TODAY! In this book, Jay gives you the systematic solution towards overcoming your own fears in order for you to make the most out of the life you deserve.
Jay is a personal development trainer and speaker in Toronto who is a life-long student of self development, as we should all be. If you need a little kick start to your day or need a little motivation, I urge you to check out his inspiring videos. Though I find all of his videos to be motivating, my favourite video is “How To Get Over Frustration”.
If you have any tips or advice on overcoming fear, I would love to hear from you!
